A blog post by Josiah, the investigative Yorkie
We had a very big activity going on at the farm. It was very noisy and even shook the ground. It ended up with tree branches upside down everywhere. I’ll tell you what happened.
One morning I heard a loud truck outside and some men talking. Miss Janet leashed me and took me to the back yard to investigate. She knows it’s important for a Yorkie to be aware of what’s going on.
She said the men were there to work on the trees. I had no idea what that meant, but we went back inside. Things just got louder from there.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The big truck sounded very close to the house. I ran into the bedroom to check it out. That big ole truck was right outside the window! Was it going to come through the house?
I barked my biggest alarm warning, but Miss Janet said don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about it? Could she not see what was happening?
That’s when the craziest thing happened. The truck reached an arm straight up into the air. Who knew trucks even had arms? And there was a man standing inside the truck’s hand! He was way up in the trees like a rodent-squirrel. What in the world?

That’s when it started raining tree branches. I’m used to branches shaking in the wind. And sometimes they fall down after a bad storm. But now the man in the truck-arm was knocking them down on purpose.
Thud, thud, thud.
I barked like crazy. Tree branches were upside down everywhere. What was happening?

Miss Janet explained those were old limbs that had to be removed. If they weren’t removed, they might fall on the house … or on us when we walked outside. Wow. That would be scary. I was glad the rodent-squirrel-man was taking care of that for us.
Miss Janet suggested I leave the bedroom area, and she closed the door. I could still hear the noise and the thuds, but not as loudly. She helped me focus on playing with my chew toys in the living room.

At one point, the noise got louder as the truck moved toward the living room window. I felt restless. I just couldn’t settle. I kept running around, barking, panting.
Miss Janet scooped me up and said we were going to visit my doodle neighbor, Beauregard. That sounded like a great idea to me. We spent the next couple hours hanging out with Beauregard in his nice quiet yard, then came home for a nap. By that time, I was too worn out to notice the noise.

When the activity was finally over, Miss Janet took me outside to check everything out. It’s important for us, as Yorkies, to know what’s happening around us. We feel responsible for handling any changes to our property. We will accept those changes, but we need to check it out for ourselves.
As I walked out the front door, I stopped suddenly and looked up. A whole mountain of tree branches was lying on the front porch right in front of the door. How crazy!
We walked around to the back yard, and it was filled with mountains of tree branches upside down, everywhere. I’d never seen so many branches up close.

Miss Janet let me sniff the branches and the ground. So many smells. I checked it out very carefully. Finally, I concluded the area was safe to walk in.
When I looked up to see where the branches had come from, I saw a lot more sky than usual. It sure looked different. I was glad to see plenty of branches were left for those rodent-squirrels to run in. I’ll still have my daily entertainment of tracking and barking at them.
Wow, all that tree branch rearranging was a big activity here on the farm. I’m glad that’s over. But I’m also grateful to know when we walk outside, we won’t have old branches thudding down on top of us. Sometimes the humans really do know a thing or two.
Now that everything has settled down again, I really do need a nap. That was a lot!
Yawns and cuddles,
Josiah
