Lessons I’m Teaching My Human

A blog post by Josiah, the human-teaching Yorkie

I’ve been living with Miss Janet for a year now. I’ve taught her so many things. She’s still learning some of those lessons, but I think she’ll catch on because I’m an excellent teacher. I want to share those lessons with you. Maybe you’d like to learn them too!

1. Use your voice

Miss Janet thinks I use my voice too often and too loudly. But I think she could learn to speak up more. It’s important to share what you think. How else will people know? Whenever I bark, I’m teaching her to speak up.

2. Friends make life fun

I always have the best time with my friends, like my pup friends, Beauregard and Lily, and my animal friends on the farm: the donkeys, sheep, horses, and chickens. It’s a fun day when I see my friends. Miss Janet has fun visiting her friends too. I take credit for teaching her that. Sometimes she even brings me along!

3. Don’t forget playtime

Miss Janet gets too serious sometimes. I always remind her to have some playtime. I bring her one of my toys so she can toss it for me. Nothing like a game of fetch to make a day more fun. I add my growling and gurgling sounds to make her smile.

4. Take more naps

Naptime is the key to a successful life. Everything is easier after a good nap. Miss Janet doesn’t nap enough, despite the excellent examples I set for her. I guess she is still learning.

5. Expect a treat

I’m teaching Miss Janet that she should always expect treats. I do! I expect a yummy treat every single day. If I don’t get one, it’s just because Miss Janet forgot. If she would take more naps, she would remember those important things.

6. Cuddle breaks are important

I love my cuddle time. A back rub or tummy tickle. I turn into a roly-poly in my cuddly blankets. I have to remind Miss Janet to take cuddle breaks during the day. Cuddles are the best feeling in the world. And taking a relaxing break is important for all humans.

7. Size is relative

Everyone says I’m small. I’m an eight-pound Yorkie, so you certainly wouldn’t confuse me with an elephant. Miss Janet and I share size in common: she is short for a human. But I’m teaching her that size is relative. I’ve got a lot of big personality packed inside my tiny Yorkie self. It’s who you are inside that counts.

8. Stay curious

I learn so much from watching the yard, whether I’m looking through a window or patrolling outside. I’m always curious about what’s going on around me. Miss Janet doesn’t always pay attention to the windows. But I’ve noticed the more time she spends with me, the more she likes to look at the yard. She’s learning to be curious just like me.

9. Blueberries are a great way to start the day

One day Miss Janet gave me a couple small pieces of blueberries. They were so yummy. I let her know they were a big hit with me. Now she gives me a couple blueberry pieces every day, and she eats them too. I’m so glad I helped her discover this tasty treat. What a fun way to start the day.

10. Remember to laugh

Miss Janet laughs a lot with me. She picked up that lesson really well. I think it’s because I’m so cute and funny. How could she not laugh at my adorable antics? I even laugh at myself. It’s fun to be a Yorkie.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my lessons. I really think they will help you have lots of fun. Have a great Yorkie day!

Cuddles and kisses,

Josiah
