When the Sky Gets Dark and Loud

A blog post by Josiah, the thundering Yorkie

The sky is different today. It’s dark even though it’s not bedtime. I hear lots of booming. Miss Janet says a thunderstorm is moving in. She doesn’t realize I heard it way before she did. My ears are that amazing.

When I hear thunder-booms, I check to be sure everything looks okay outside.

Whenever the sky gets like this, I go to the window to investigate. But I don’t really see anything alarming. The air feels different. My hair feels funny. Interesting.

When those thunder-booms get louder, I look at Miss Janet, but she’s just sitting on the couch, reading. She doesn’t even look up. I guess it’s no big deal. I settle back down.

I’m not sure what thunder is, but I can hear it and feel it.

One time, the thunder-booms were loud enough to startle both of us. We were sitting on the couch and heard a really big kaboom. The whole house shook. I jumped, and so did Miss Janet. We looked at each other.

Within seconds, another huge kaboom shook the house. This sounded like an all-out assault. I flew down the couch steps and ran in circles, barking. I wasn’t sure which way the threat was coming from. It sounded like it was right on top of us.

Miss Janet looked out the window while I waited for her instructions. Then she just picked me up, brought me back to the couch, and cuddled me. She told me everything was fine. I calmed down again. The booms got quieter.

After the kaboom assault, I waited for Miss Janet’s instructions.

I’m still not sure what thunderstorms really are. They’re certainly unusual and interesting. Sometimes I have to investigate. Sometimes I have to bark. Mostly I guess I can ignore them.

There’s a thunderstorm rolling in right now. Miss Janet is chilling on the couch. Seems like a perfectly good time to stretch out on the couch blankets for a nap.

Cuddles and wiggles,

Josiah

Most thunderstorms are simply a perfect backdrop for naptime.
