A blog post by Josiah, the pouncing Yorkie
I love to go outside at night. So many sounds and smells in every direction. We Yorkies don’t see a lot of details in the dark, but we see movement. When movement combines with my amazing Yorkie nose and ears, the nighttime comes alive.
Miss Janet likes to look at the night sky. I don’t really understand why. She likes to stand there, look up, and take deep breaths. She finds the stars amazing.

I can’t really see these stars she is talking about, and to me, the night sky is not very interesting. What’s really interesting is all the activity taking place on the ground. That’s where my focus goes. Miss Janet looks up; I look down.
I love tracking movement on the ground. So many bugs running around below the blades of grass. All shapes and sizes. Making different sounds. I see a bug and track it very carefully. Then I pounce!

I love that pouncing feeling. Flying over the grass, landing with my paws in the squishy dirt. I never catch the bugs. They’re too fast, and they zig zag. But it’s fun pouncing. When one bug escapes, I look for another bug to track.
I hear sounds all around us too. Bigger creatures crawling through the underbrush, moving around the burn pile, or walking out in the dark field. I can’t see them, but I can hear and smell them. Possums, mice, voles, deer. I hear bats and owls up in the trees, and sometimes a crazy bird singing as if the sun is up.

It’s amazing how busy the night air is with its cool breeze. It’s fun and refreshing. I can get away with lots of exploring and pouncing while Miss Janet is distracted by the stars. I don’t understand the stars. But I like them because they give me lots of freedom.
I am glad Miss Janet likes to spend time under the night sky. Our nighttime walks are so fun. Eventually I get sleepy from all that nose work and pouncing. I tug at my leash, ready for bed. My junior-astronomer-human reluctantly leaves her star gazing, and we trek back inside.

As we walk back home, I sometimes hear a donkey or sheep, or even the silly rooster, making noise in the barnyard. I guess they all like the night sky too. I’m so glad I get to live on a farm. It’s always interesting and entertaining, day and night.
Hope you get to enjoy the night sky where you live. It’s fun!
Paw pats and pounces,
Josiah
