A Yorkie’s Favorite Summer Things

A blog post by Josiah, the summer-loving Yorkie

Summer is awesome. The outdoors is warm and green. Indoors is shady and cool. It’s the perfect Yorkie time of year. Here are my top 3 favorite things about summer:

The Busy Meadow

Summer means so much activity in the meadow. All the creatures are out and about, running, flying, crawling everywhere, day and night. I can hardly keep up!

I love running through the meadow in summer. The grass is tall and hides lots of tiny creatures and big smells. I could spend all day just nosing through the grass and never get bored.

The summer meadow is filled with adventure.

Then I hear something overhead, and it’s a flock of birds chattering or a rodent-squirrel jumping from one tree to the next: impressive when you stop to watch their acrobatics.

The big farm animals run through the meadow too: horses, donkeys, sheep. They are all my friends. I think they love summer as much as I do. They sure do chew a lot in the meadow. Miss Janet won’t let me chew everything in sight like they get to. She says it’s because they are bigger than I am, and they are designed to eat those things.

After all that running and nose work in the warm air, I head inside for my morning nap. I love the summer meadow, but it sure takes a lot out of me.

After a good meadow walk, I need a serious morning nap.

Summer Blueberry Treats

Another favorite part of summer is frozen blueberries. Miss Janet thaws them out till they’re soft (to avoid a choking/digestive hazard). But they still taste nice and chilled. What an awesome treat.

I love my chilled blueberry treat.

I really enjoy the taste of those blueberries. They help cool me down. Of course, now that I feel nice and cool, I have to indulge in another nap. No sense wasting that cool feeling on an exhausting activity.

Nothing like a nice cool summer nap to follow a chilled blueberry treat.

Summer Rain

We get a lot of rain in the summer, almost every day lately. While I don’t like being outside in the rain and feeling weighed down by wet hair, I do like when the rain moves in. It makes everything cool and even greener than before.

The best time for my walk is right before the rain comes. The sky gets cloudy, the yard is covered with shade, a nice cool breeze blows. Things in the yard get quiet as creatures find their shelter.

I keep a close eye on the weather so I can time my pre-rain walk perfectly.

If Miss Janet isn’t paying attention, I jump up to let her know it’s time for my pre-rain walk. I have learned by observation that she doesn’t like walking in the rain any more than I do. (She had me fooled for a long time.) When she realizes a storm is moving in, she will take me outside immediately. Ahhh, that nice cool air. Perfect.

When we come back inside, the rain starts to fall and makes a beautiful, soothing sound on the roof. There’s only one way to fully enjoy that moment. You guessed it: a nap. Rain and naptime are made for each other.

Nothing says summer like rain and nap.

Those are my 3 favorite things about summer. I guess you could say it’s really 4 things, with naptime being my all-time favorite summer activity. In fact, I love naptime year round.

I hope you are enjoying some warm, cool, sunny, rainy, sleepy summer days.

Snoozies and slurpies,

Josiah

Naptime is definitely my favorite part of summer … and the whole year!
