A blog post by Josiah, the new year Yorkie puppy
We’ve started a new year. I don’t really understand how that works. But I love having a reason to celebrate.
Speaking of celebrations, that New Year’s Eve celebration was loud! I was visiting my doodle friend, Beauregard, at his farm. It was just about bedtime. And suddenly, it sounded like everything in the neighborhood blew up.
I was wrapped in a blanket on Miss Janet’s lap. Beauregard stayed calm, so I tried to stay calm. Finally, I just burrowed inside the blanket till Miss Janet said the blowups were done. Whew!

Now that it’s finally quiet again, I can share what I’m excited about for the new year:
- This is the year when I will have my first birthday. In just a few more months, I’ll be a fully grown, adult Yorkie! I’ve enjoyed being a puppy, but I think I’ll love being a big dog.
- In a few weeks, I’ll start walking safely downstairs instead of being carried like a baby. I’ve been training on the outside steps, and I’ve learned to keep my core low. My rear end doesn’t pop up anymore. I’m ready!

- I look forward to all the yummy treats I’ll get in the new year. Beauregard gave me some of his favorite treats for Christmas. Miss Janet got me a special bag of treats too. I earn treats for obeying commands. But sometimes Miss Janet gives me a treat “just because.” Those are my favorite kind. They’re exciting and unexpected. They make me feel very special.
- I’m learning to eat different kinds of dog-safe vegetables and fruit. I just get little pieces, but they taste great, and they’re good for me. Miss Janet eats them too, so it’s fun to eat together. She says in the new year, I’ll get to try some new dog-safe veggie snacks.

- I look forward to lots of walks in the new year. Now that the trees have stopped throwing acorns on the ground (I’m not allowed to eat them), and it’s still too cold for mushrooms to grow (I’m not allowed to eat them), I’ve expanded my walking territory. The whole back yard, side yard, and hillside meadow are safe. I can’t wait for more fun exploration in the new year.
- Sometime later this year, when I’m done with my puppy growing, I’ll be able to sleep in the bed! I can’t wait for that to happen. Miss Janet got a low bed that will be safe for me to get in and out of. I’ve already practiced sitting on the bed a few times, supervised, of course, and it’s awesome. So comfy! Just a few more months, and my growth plates will close. I’ll be ready for new adventures.

- Miss Janet has hinted about a different kind of outing this year. She won’t tell me exactly what she has in mind. But I know it will be fun. I love to see new places and meet new people.
This will be an exciting year of new experiences and adventures. I love being a Yorkie puppy and can’t wait to experience my new year.
Are you excited about your new year? I hope it’s a great one with lots of treats “just because.”
Kisses and wiggles,
Josiah
