Windy Winter Day

A blog post by Josiah, the revved-up Yorkie puppy

Wow, it’s windy today. The cold-front monster is returning from his vacation. Soon, it’s going to get really chilly. But right now, it’s not too cold. It’s just a very windy day, and that is lots of fun for a Yorkie puppy like me.

Miss Janet and I played outside for the longest time because she knew I would enjoy the wind. We had so much fun. I ran up and down the hill, feeling revved up by the wind. It gave me so much energy.

I chased leaves everywhere. They flew back and forth across the yard. They swirled up and down. When they landed on top of me, I grabbed and crunched them with my teeth.

I stared into the wind, breathed in all that air. It was moving so fast that I coughed a little. But then I took another big gulp of air. It tasted like rain, but there was no water.

The wind tasted like rain without water. It carried a million scents. I breathed in big gulps of air.

I could smell so many scents that were carried on the wind. I have a great Yorkie nose, so I always smell lots of things. But the wind made it even greater. The wind super-powered my already amazing Yorkie nose.

I could smell all kinds of animals, plants, people. I got startled a few times because it felt like they were all in my yard! But of course, they were far away. Their scent was carried by the wind, straight to my nose. I could smell all kinds of yummy food too. I wished the wind would carry that food into my yard.

The trees were swaying back and forth, singing a song. The wind had its own song too. It was a buzzing, kind of humming sound, and it changed every few minutes.

I loved listening to the wind’s song.

Birds were flying loops in the air, calling out, probably to keep from crashing into each other. Up they would soar, then dive back down, then swoop up in a loop. I got dizzy just watching them.

The donkeys and sheep were grazing in the field. They seemed undisturbed by the wind. The sheep just stared at me. That’s all they ever do. I couldn’t imagine why they weren’t all prancing around, enjoying this windy day.

The sheep are always staring. But I like them. They are my friends.

I loved how the wind fluffed my hair. My skin felt tingly. My energy kept revving up. I ran zoomies with the wind pushing me back sometimes and then speeding me forward. Then I jumped in a pile of leaves, scattered them everywhere, and chased them. I am great at capturing a leaf mid-air. I am laser-focused.

Miss Janet told me even though it was a windy day, it was a safe wind, just fast enough to be fun but not dangerous. She said sometimes when there is a bad storm, the wind is ferocious and can throw big objects through the air. I don’t want to be outside for that.

She said when the wind is that fierce, we will stay indoors. When we have to go out, we’ll be fast about it and stay right by the shelter of the porch. I’m glad I got to enjoy the fun, safe kind of wind today.

I loved the way the wind fluffed my hair. It made me feel so energized.

After a great playtime on the hill, we moved to the side yard where there’s an old slide. I’ve looked at it many times but never climbed up. The wind was tossing leaves onto the slide. I stood on my hind legs to check out the action. I reached for a leaf but couldn’t quit grab it. When it slid to the ground, I chomped it.

Then I got really brave and hopped up on the slide. I picked up the leaves with my teeth and carried them down. Again and again. What a fun new game. I’ll have to add the slide to my outdoor obstacle course for future adventures. We Yorkies love safe obstacle courses. It’s great mental exercise.

The old slide was fun! I’m going to add it to my everyday outdoor adventures.

Even though I was having so much fun running around in the wind, I started to feel sleepy. All my zoomies, the bursts of energy, jumping on leaves, and especially sorting through all those smells, it was a lot for me. I’m just a puppy, after all.

We walked back to the front door. I paused for a moment to look back at the wind, let it fluff my hair again, listen to its song, and be thankful for a fun outing.

Back inside, I took a drink of water and climbed into my dog bed. I felt a short burst of energy again and bounced around. Miss Janet picked me up and fluffed my hair some more—she realized I like that. I got sleepy again, and this time, I was ready for my nap.

What a fun day! I’ll probably dream about the amazing winter wind.

Fluffs and squiggles,

Josiah

Naptime after a fun, windy, winter day.
