A blog post by Josiah, the well-behaved, zooming Yorkie puppy
A few weeks ago, I met the cold-front monster for the first time. He took a break for a few weeks, so I had lots of playtime outside.
Now the cold-front monster is back in full force. But that’s okay. I’ve discovered I can have just as much fun indoors. I’ve learned that chilly weather creates lots of indoor zoomies.
I go outside for my crisp, brisk walk. Miss Janet doesn’t want me to stay outside in the cold too long because I’m still a puppy. I don’t regulate my temperature very well. But that’s okay. A quick and chilly visit outdoors fills me with lots of zoomie energy to unleash when I get back inside.

I’m not fully free-roaming indoors yet. That’ll start in January when I’m seven months old. (Miss Janet is very scientific about these things, and there’s no talking her out of it.) But I do get to tour the indoors when I first walk in from my walks.
I zoom from room to room, checking up on everything. I bark at the puppy in the mirror—he looks just like me. I step on the scale—seven pounds! I run to the kitchen for a drink of water. I sit a few times to get treat rewards. I practice walking up and down my doggy steps that lead to the armchair. I zoom some more.
Then Miss Janet puts me in my playpen. It’s my own indoor racetrack. I can get as wild as I want.
I run zoomies and grab toys as I run by, tossing them in the air and catching them on the next pass. I spin and roll, growling all the while in my most ferocious voice. It’s so much fun. I love my zoomie playpen.

After a while, when I get tired, I relax on the floor of the playpen. That’s Miss Janet’s cue to pick me up and put me in my dog bed on the couch. I snuggle under the blanket fort with lots of loud shuddering and sighing. I recharge my energy, so I can be ready to do more zoomies when I wake up.
I have lavender toys in my dog bed. If I’m still feeling wired at first, I’ll play with them till I fall asleep. I’ll play with them again as I wake up. That’s Miss Janet’s cue to take me outside again for a power-up zoom around the yard. Then the cycle repeats.
What I love about being a grownup puppy is that I’m rarely in my crate anymore except for meals and nighttime sleeping. I am such a well-behaved, grownup puppy now that I get lots of playpen and couch dog bed privileges, as well as my indoor zoom tours after my walks.

So, even though that cold-front monster has limited my outdoor time, I’m not missing out on any fun. The zoomie fun has simply followed me indoors. It’s great to be a grownup, zooming puppy. I think winter may be my favorite season after all.
How about you? Does cold weather make you want to run zoomies? I’ll race you!
Josiah
