A blog post by Josiah, the fun-loving Yorkie puppy
I was in my naptime crate when Miss Janet came in, all excited, and put me in my backpack carrier. I never know what she is up to. She likes to socialize me and take me on adventures. She told me I would like this one.
Next thing I knew, we were in Beauregard’s yard. He is my neighbor—a giant doodle—and he is like a big brother to me. Lots of my aunts were arriving too. I was so excited to see everyone. Beauregard ran up to greet me.
There were nice flat stones and tree branches in the middle, with chairs all around it. As I got near the stones, I could tell the tree branches in the middle were very hot. Miss Janet said it was a bonfire, and we would sit around the fire and enjoy being outside.

Then I got the biggest surprise. I got to run free with Beauregard—without my leash. Miss Janet was worried he would trample me, but he just wanted to sit and chew on a stick. He even held the stick for me to chew on. Whenever he stood up, he just stepped carefully over me. No trampling. He is a very good big brother.
We walked down to the creek, and I had to hurdle a fallen branch to get to the water. I’m such a big dog! I loved getting my feet all mushy in the mud. The water felt really good, and I drank it. It tasted like moss.
We went back to the bonfire, and my aunts took turns holding me and tickling my tummy. They told me I am really cute. Then they let me chase sticks some more with Beauregard.

I really liked seeing so many of my favorite people in one place. They laughed a lot. I think they are very fun-loving. I’m glad they let me have fun with them.
At one point, Beauregard’s mom went inside to get some things. Beauregard went with her, and I followed. We ran into the kitchen. It was the first time I got to run free inside their house. How fun! I’m a big dog now. I know how to behave indoors.
We sat outside till after dark. Miss Janet kept checking on me because she couldn’t see me very well. My black puppy coat was hard to see in the firelight. But I never left Beauregard’s side. I knew he would protect me from all the sounds and smells.

I recognized the sound of the frogs—I’m not supposed to eat them, just listen. And I smelled the deer nearby. Some smells I wasn’t sure about. But nothing made me nervous because Beauregard wasn’t nervous. When he hears something disturbing, he barks with a really loud woo-woo-woo. He didn’t bark, so I knew all was well.
I think Miss Janet was nervous about keeping track of me, but she’s always like that. She worries about everything. But I wasn’t worried at all. I’m smart enough to stay near my people.
I had so much fun, but when I got home, I was really tired. I went right to sleep on my cool dog bed until it was bedtime for real. The next day, I slept in my chill-time crate all afternoon. My hair smelled a little like the firewood that night. By the next morning, it had aired out.

I hope we will have more fun adventures soon. Do you enjoy sitting outside at night, listening to all the sounds of nature? It’s really fun, especially when you get to share it with your friends.
Wags and wiggles,
Josiah
