My Favorite Things about Being a Yorkie

A blog post by Clutch, the celebrating Yorkie

Friday is National Yorkie Day, and I think we need to celebrate for a whole week. I’m calling this National Yorkie Week. Time to reflect on what I love best about being a Yorkie—with a few simple lessons about what humans can learn from Yorkies. Ready to celebrate with me?

A Nose that Knows

I’m proud of my amazing nose. We Yorkies were bred for sniffing. We’re famous for it. And I’m really good at it. I can sniff out any creature, any time, anywhere.

Lesson: Be curious and ready to explore the world around you.

Jump and Wiggle

I can jump straight up with a flourish and a wiggle when I’m excited. It’s fun, and it feels like flying. Plus, it makes me look adorable.

Lesson: It’s cool to show your excitement and joy.

Joy is contagious. Let your joy shine and brighten someone’s day.

Small Size, Big Personality

I may have a compact size, but my personality reaches above the trees and stretches to the horizon. When people meet me, they have no doubt I’m a very big presence.

Lesson: Size doesn’t limit your influence. You can make a big impact in many ways.

Expressive Voice

With a big personality comes a big voice. I love expressing myself with no hesitation, even if I’m not always sure what I need yet. At least I get the conversation started.

Lesson: It’s okay to speak up for what you need, even if you don’t have the details worked out yet.

Helping Humans Feel Better

If someone is upset, I try to calm them down and remind them they’re part of my pack.

Lesson: Just be kind, and you can really help someone have a better day.

A little kindness will make a good difference in someone’s day.

Snack Time

Snacks and treats are one of the best parts of my day. I savor and enjoy every morsel. I especially like the unexpected treats I get “just because.”

Lesson: Savor the simple delights of your day.

Small Enough to Fit under the Couch

I love how easily I can stretch out under the couch or chairs if I want a cozy spot—or if I don’t want a bath.

Lesson: Sometimes you just need a little quiet time to yourself, and that’s okay.

Obedient, Most of the Time

I love that I know how to be obedient—whether I decide to use that skill or not. I know how to sit, especially when a treat is involved.

Lesson: It’s good to know how to respond appropriately. And when you forget, it’s helpful to be reminded by people who care.

It’s fun to be a Yorkie. Humans can learn a lot from us.

My Advanced Vocabulary

I know the difference between “banana,” “blueberry,” and “watermelon.” And I love all of them!

Lesson: Keep learning new things. The world is such an interesting place.

Enthusiastic Greeter

When humans come to visit, I make sure they feel welcome with my barks, jumps, zoomies, and cute, wagging tail.

Lesson: Let people know you’re glad to see them. It’ll make their day better and yours.

My Adorable Cuteness

Let’s face it: I am very cute. I can’t help it. It’s who I am. And it gets me lots of snacks, treats, and attention.

Lesson: Be yourself. Let people love and appreciate you for who you are.

Be yourself. Let people love you for who you are.

My Amazing Ears

My Yorkie ears are big and amazing. I can hear sounds from every direction, so I always know what’s going on.

Lesson: Be a good listener. It’ll help you navigate life well.

Boldness Tempered with Wisdom

I love my curiosity and boldness mixed with caution. I will stick my head into a hole in the ground to see what’s in there. And I will jump two feet in the air when I find out.

Lesson: It’s fun to explore new things, and it’s wise to know when to proceed with caution.

Great Napper

I can curl up or stretch out and take it easy, anytime, anywhere. I can wake and jump up quickly at the sound of a snack being prepared in the kitchen.

Lesson: Enjoy a simple, balanced rhythm every day.

Have a very Yorkie week! Stay curious, be yourself, embrace life, show kindness, be joyful, take some quiet time for yourself, have a good nap, and enjoy those treats.

Have a very Yorkie Week!
