A blog post by Clutch, the vacationing Yorkie
By the time you read this, I will be enjoying my summer vacation. Miss Janet and I will be visiting my puppyhood farm and my giant doodle brother, Beauregard. I’m looking forward to my summer vacation.
Lots of Vacation Preparation
There’s a lot of preparation involved. I have to take a lot of naps ahead of time to get ready for Beauregard. He is a lot for me to handle. I’m used to my quiet life in my own apartment. I like seeing Beauregard (well, mostly), and he gets really excited to see me. But I have to be well-rested.
Miss Janet has to pack all my provisions. She has to bring my food bag, my carrot and blueberry snacks, my blankets, my calming chews in case of thunder, and my occasional treats for when I’m a good boy. I don’t get a lot of treats during my vacation because I’m not always a good boy like I am at home. I admit I get into a fuss with Beauregard sometimes.
Miss Janet doesn’t have to pack any of my toys because it’s fun to play with Beauregard’s toys. He lets me pick out whichever toys I want to play with. He really wants me to play with him, but I prefer to play alongside him. He is so gigantic that I can’t handle him jumping on me or throwing a Kong at me that’s bigger than my head.

The only time Beauregard gets upset with me is when I try to eat his food. That makes Miss Janet upset with me too. Good grief. It’s just a tidbit. I just want to try something new.
On my summer vacation, we sleep in the basement, and Beauregard gets to join us. It’s very comfortable. Miss Janet makes sure to bring my blankets from home, so I can get acclimated. I let Beauregard share the blankets too. He likes hanging out with us.
The basement room has no windows, so it’s very dark. Miss Janet has learned to leave on a nightlight so we can see a little bit. But I don’t know when the sun is up, so Miss Janet gets to sleep late. I think she does that on purpose.
Fun Vacation Activities
During the day, I get to run around on the farm. It’s so much fun. I love to run. I get to stand in the creek and cool off. The creek water is good to drink too. Fishy and mossy tasting and very refreshing.
Inevitably, Miss Janet will put me in the swimming pool. I’m not a fan of the pool, but she will make a float for me and pull me around the shallow end. That’s not so bad, and it makes her happy. Sometimes, you have to give the humans a little treat.
We sit outside a lot—on the porch, in the yard, by the creek, by the pool, always in the shade. When Miss Janet wants to read, she’ll put me inside because I distract her outside. Beauregard will sit with her on the porch. I will pout by the window for a while, but then I’ll realize I have the whole house to myself. Perfect time for a nap.

When we’re all outside, I like to play in the fruit tree orchard, around the magnolia tree, through the tall grassy field, and around the creek bed. It’s always an adventure. Such a variety of things to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell.
I can smell the voles crawling underground and would love to catch one. But I’m not allowed to dig up the yard, so I just enjoy smelling them as they burrow around. I try to guess where they are, and I run in circles, following my incredible nose. It’s very exciting. There are a lot of voles!
Relaxing Vacation Evenings
In the evening, we see a lot of deer outside. I would like to chase them, but Miss Janet won’t let me. She says we’re in a wildlife sanctuary and need to respect all the animals.
We hear so many birds and frogs because of the creek and the big canopy trees. I ate a frog once. It was not a good experience. I still try to lick them, if I can, but Miss Janet steers me away from them. She has become an excellent frog spotter.

Before bedtime, we all sit on the couch together and watch a movie. I move around a lot to get comfy—on the back of the couch, on the arm rest, close to Beauregard, away from Beauregard, somewhere in the middle. Eventually, Beauregard and I doze off until Miss Janet tells us it’s time to move to the basement. We have another good snooze, and then we wake up to another fun vacation day.
As I’m writing about all of these things, I’m getting very excited for my summer vacation on my puppyhood farm with Beauregard. So much to see and do. I need to be ready for all those adventures.
I better go take another nap.
I hope you have a great summer vacation too,
Clutch
