Every Morning Is New for a Yorkie

A blog post by Clutch, the morning sunshine Yorkie

I wake up with the sunrise. Our bedroom has a transom window where all the morning light comes in. It fills me with energy and joy for an exciting new day. Lots of adventures ahead! I do my morning stretches, and I’m ready to explore the day.

Miss Janet is not a morning person. She would probably sleep through the entire morning if I would let her. And she would miss so much! I consider it my duty and privilege to wake her with the sunrise so she can enjoy it with me.

She grumbles a lot at that hour. She always gets annoyed when I grumble, but oh my goodness, she is a champion grumbler and doesn’t even realize it.

We have a deal worked out. She takes me outside so I won’t start whining because she knows I will. Smart, that one. It’s not a leisurely stroll, but rather a do what you need to do and don’t take too long.

I catch the first scents of the day. Find out which creatures walked through the fields at night and who might still be lingering. I smell the flowers that are just opening. Breathe in all that fresh morning air. It’s a beautiful time of day. Too bad for Miss Janet that she sleepwalks through it.

It’s bright and early, and I’m ready for my morning adventure.

We go back inside, and even though I’m starving, Miss Janet insists we go back to bed. She says, “I’m not done sleeping.” Translate: “You’d better fall back asleep too, or at least pretend to sleep.”

Well, of course I fall back asleep. Even though I love waking up with the sunrise, nap time is an ongoing and vital part of my day. Even with an empty, rumbling belly.

Miss Janet will often sleep two hours longer. As she starts to stir, I become hopeful. That means I’ll get my meal soon. I love meal time. And snack time. And treat time. And any other time I can get away with eating something. I’m a big fan of eating.

Too slowly, we move into the kitchen, and I make a big production of jumping up and down. Did you know Yorkies can jump really high? I jump so high my nose nearly reaches the counter. I wiggle while I jump, so Miss Janet can see my enthusiasm.

She likes to celebrate with me. With an excited voice, she says, “Are you hungry?”

Lots more wiggle-jumping on my part.

“You want your dinner?”

Meal time makes me jump!

Yes, even breakfast is called dinner. She tries to keep her language simple for me. She has no idea how big my vocabulary really is. I just pretend not to understand words when it works to my advantage.

She tells me to eat slowly and enjoy my food. I inhale it. Within minutes, my dish is empty and my belly is full.

Then we go outside again, for a real walk this time. I love the dew on the tall grass. It’s a fun way to wash my face. I see small animals scurrying through the field. If I’m lucky, I catch an insect. I might eat it for dessert, or just smell it. Not all insects taste good.

We take different routes on our morning walk. Sometimes we will go to the bottom of the hill, where I see horses. At other times, we stroll through the back yard, where I can investigate the underbrush. I never know what creatures I’ll find there, but it’s always exciting.

I can take five minutes just to smell one blade of grass and learn everything that took place in the yard the night before.

After our walk, we go back inside. I roll around on the carpet, wiggling all over, making gurgling sounds of joy in my own language. This can go on for quite a while, as it’s really fun. Sometimes it even leads to zoomies.

I love to roll on the carpet and fluff my hair.

My favorite thing is to lie on my side and push myself around in a circle, then repeat on the other side. It’s a great way to get rid of any itches and to fluff all my hair. Like taking a bath but without the awful water weighing me down. I do a quick shake when I’m done, and I feel refreshed.

Finally, I’m ready for my second morning nap. I hop up on the couch, wind around in my dog bed, get settled, and start snoozing. I have conquered the morning, dragged Miss Janet into the day, and my morning work is done.

Wake me for any snacks.

Otherwise, let me snooze for as long as I please, so I’m ready for whatever adventure comes next.

Happy Mornings!
